January Notes:
This month we have begun to work on many different topics.
We continue to meet in reading groups daily to focus on fluency, decoding and comprehension. Within our groups we are reading a text and thinking more deeply about the text. We have been asking more questions and drawing conclusions about what we read so that we have more of an understanding about what we are reading.
In math we started our fraction unit. We are working on learning about how to compare different size fractions, equivalent fractions, fractions of objects in a set and naming different types of fractions. Please continue to work on multiplication and division at home so that the facts continue to be built into memory. This will be very important for fourth grade.
In Social Studies we completed our first exhibition before our vacation. Each child did a fabulous job of speaking in public and presenting what they learned about their country in Africa.
This month in writing the children have been working on writing New Year's resolutions. They are focusing on writing more details and editing their work. They are checking for capital letters, ending marks and correct spelling. Resolutions will be on display outside of our classroom.
Both 3A and 3B collected money for Unicef in October and November. I am proud of our third grade classes. They raised 318 dollars for Unicef. Unicef provides help to countries that lack resources and funds to help their citizens as well as countries that experience a natural disaster. They help provide shelter, food, water, vaccinations and clothing.
