We had a wonderful week back in 3B last week filled with many new learning experiences as well as new procedures. With this brand new year came brand new starts and we worked together as a class to design some new year's resolutions for us to follow. I was so proud of all of their work last week! There is still so much for us to do in the week ahead. Below are some key points broken down by content area to help keep you informed with what we are working on this week:
- Reading Street - This week we will be reviewing all of the material that we covered during Unit 2. This week we will be reading the story “The Legend of the Bluebonnet” by Tomie DePaola. During this week we will continue to draw conclusions based on what we have read as well as learn the meaning of the following words: drought, famine, miraculous, possession, restored, sacrifice, selfish, valued, and warrior. Please make sure to talk to your children about what they have been learning in reading and the meaning of these words.
- Writing - During our writing workshop time, students have been continuing to practice expressing their ideas in complete sentences. We have been working particularly hard on answering questions related to a story - turning the question around and adding supporting details from the text. During this week, students will begin to use their imaginations to write their own stories applying our writing rules as well as creatively respond to the stories in which they are reading through dialogue journals and written responses. They will also have the opportunity to write about their most valuable possession to establish a text-to-self relationship with the story read.
- Math - We had a lot of fun last week developing our skills surrounding fractions. We reviewed the idea of numerator and denominator as well as developed our understanding of equivalent fractions. Our students kept challenging themselves and raising the expectations. During our math this week, students will continue to explore equivalent fractions and establish their understanding of comparing fractions.
- Social Studies - With next week being Peace Week here at Highlander, 3B will begin to create their reflective process towards developing a project to display during peace week. We will begin to discuss ideas as a class on Monday and develop it throughout the week.
Homework:
Homework packets have been coming home every Monday and are asked to be sent back every Friday with your child with their spelling journals. Our spelling focus for this week is compound words and the words for this week are as follows: delays, colonies, surveys, tries, toys, stories, essays, fairies, bullies, ponies, spies, donkeys, holidays, monkeys, trophies, dictionaries, and similarities.
Other Notes:
I am so proud of all of our students for their hard work. If you would like to come into the classroom to see our students in action, please don't hesitate to let me know. It would be wonderful to have you there with us to share in our learning and exploration. Below are just a few important dates to remember and plan for:
- Monday, January 18th - Martin Luther King Day
- Tuesday, January 19th-Friday, January 22nd - Peace Week
Thank you for everything and I look forward to seeing you soon!
