Welcome to Highlander Charter School!

Welcome to Highlander Charter School’s newly designed website! It is with great excitement that we share with you the end result of the work we have completed with Schwadesign as they assisted us in developing a new tag line and logo that would lead us into our the second decade of our school’s existence.  We are confident that our website will be user friendly for students, families and staff and will provide all of the information that visitors need to have a full understanding of Highlander Charter School.

This year is Highlander's 10th Anniversary!  Over the past 10 years, Highlander has grown and changed in many ways.  We now service 284 students from towns and cities throughout the state of RI.  True to our mission, however, the 75% of our students come from Providence and many of the others from the other urban communities of Pawtucket and Central Falls.  Another noticeable change is our school location. We have moved from our home on Greeley Street to a newly renovated building at 42 Lexington Avenue. This is a great space that we share with !CITYARTS!; in addition to our classroom spaces, we have a newly designed library, a playground, a town meeting room/cafeteria, shared art rooms, and a shared dance space, music room and art gallery.

Some changes are not evident from the outside and these changes are the most significant.  As we move into our second decade, we are striving to balance the project-based philosophy the school was founded on with a more structured, direct instruction curriculum that meets the learning needs of our students.  It is crucial that we blend both aspects of learning in order to continue to create the best learning environment possible. It is equally important to us that our student develop their own interests and passions, as well as being successful readers, writers and mathematicians.

Highlander continues to be a place where each students individual needs are met through scheduled Learning Plan Meetings and Home Visits, accessing a range of support services and learning specialists, and interacting with a community composed of caring, dedicated adults. As we move forward, our goal is to keep what has worked so well during the past ten years and to develop the new and exciting initiatives to improve teaching and learning at Highlander as we move into the future of our school!
