Basketball Team’s Senior Night
This year on February 14th Highlander got to celebrate a special group of kids. For the first time in the history of our school we get to celebrate our seniors, who will be leaving Highlander to enter the real world. It is a special time to recognize the commitment, dedication, and hard work that these students have put into their school lives.
Three of these seniors were also recognized not only for the work they put in while in the classroom, but also for their work on the basketball court. Michael Rivas(#23), Radalvyn Guzman(#4), and Wesley Monteiro (#2) have been a part of the Highlander Hawks basketball team since we started the program three years ago. As a coach I’m so thankful for and proud of these three kids. They have been dedicated to the program, worked hard to achieve team goals, and have learned life lessons that cannot be learned without the experiences that they have been a part of. Things like time management, collaboration with peers, teamwork, sacrificing personal goals for team goals, perseverance during tough times, and celebrating the success of the team over self, are just a small part of what these three have been a part of for the last three years.
I remember when we had our first preseason meeting three years ago. I stepped into the gym and talked about building the foundation to something special. Something that they could look back and say that they were a part of building. There were quite a few kids during that first meeting who thought it would be “cool” or “fun” to play high school basketball. Not all of them lasted through that season or the next. Wesley, Michael, and Radalvyn dedicated themselves to the team and to the school. They stuck with their team through thick and thin. As a result, they (and our team) have become stronger, smarter, and more experienced. I cannot wait to see what life has in store for these three young men. I know that they are prepared to take on whatever challenges life presents them, and that they are equipped to tackle all of the goals that they set for themselves.
Radalvyn, Wesley, and Michael, words cannot express how much you guys mean to me. Thank you for being a huge part in building our program. You have an open invitation to the gym and are always welcome at our games and practices. If there is anything that I can help you with in the future, do not hesitate to reach out to me. I’ll be keeping an eye on you guys and cannot wait to celebrate your future successes. Love you guys!!! Coach Willard.
